In today's fast-paced, and often instant world, we as humans need something that enables us to keep up with the racing of the rats, and prevents homicide. Natures wonder drug that once ingested, brings humans back to form, allows us to greet the day, and prevents us from punching our loved once in the face, or drop kicking the children across the living room. I speak of nothing other than our dear friend and enabler- coffee!
For hundreds of years, we humans have ingested enough coffee to be wired for sound. From boiling it over a wood fire, to the advent of our good friend Mr. Coffee, to an even faster and more instant method with the Keurig, the need for that hot, brown wonder beverage keeps our world ever-turning, and us humans somewhat coherent.
Something has happened to our coffee, however, that has made it lose some of its luster. As we have become more dependent on the instantaneous, the advent of the Keurig machine as brought coffee down a few pegs. This is not to say anything negative about the Keurig Corporation, in fact, I don't know of many kitchens across this country that does not have a machine in it (my kitchen included). It is great for when you're running behind after hitting the snooze button for the 87th time, and you're scrambling to find your car keys. You will be damed, however, stepping one foot out the door without your coffee, and by-god that is where Keurig comes in.... It just doesn't taste the same.
So how can you still fill your trusted tumbler, and get the best tasting coffee you've event had? Three little words: The Stovetop Percolator!
I can remember as a kid walking into my grandparents kitchen morning, noon, and night, and that stovetop coffee pot was always going. The house always had the smell of coffee in the air, and there was something safe about that. It was welcoming, as if it knew that company would show up, and stories, problems, or joys were going to be shared; of course by early afternoon the consistency of the coffee was that of motor oil, so you'd want to make a fresh pot before the juicy details of any story came to light. This is where I got my first taste of coffee- a love affair that has lated several years and continues to do so. If you have never had coffee from a pot such as this you are missing out, and you need to go find one immediately. While it may take a couple minutes more to brew, the flavor, aroma, and stories associated with it will forever be embedded into your brain. Trust me on this, go find yourself one today!
Some Helpful Hints to Percolate the Best Coffee Ever
Fill your pot full of hot water from the tap rather than cold- it will cut down on time it takes to come to a full boil!
Once the percolator begins to percolate, turn down the heat from hight to medium and allow to percolate without fear of over-bubbling, and boring the coffee.
Allow percolator to percolate for about 7-9 minutes. Once brewed, remove the pot from the heat and remove the metal basket full of hot grounds and stem from the pot (BE CAREFUL- IT WILL BE HOT!) Leave in the sink to cool before composing the grounds or discarding them.
If you're interested in locating a stovetop percolator, check your local thrift stores or antique shops. They average between $20-$40 (depends on size, condition, etc), and is totally worth it. Plus its really soothing to watch the coffee percolate!
Enjoy that Flavorful Cup!
