The New York Diner ~ Let's Bring It Back Into Style!

Whether it is your neighborhood corner eatery, a railcar style lunch counter, or you 24 hour joint, you cannot deny that diners have been and will continue to be some of the best places to eat in the world. You see them in movies, pass their neon signs at night, and you cannot tell me that their French Fries aren't the best friend potato you've ever tasted. If you have never eaten at a 24-hour diner before you are simply missing out in life.

Growing up The Diner was a treat for us kids. Whenever mom and dad said "let's go to the diner" we thought we hit the lottery. For us boys, we could get a burger, fries and chocolate milk! We didn't even need to eat a vegetable! Little did we know mom and dad ran out of ideas for dinner that night, but no one cared. For the hour our so that we were there, that booth was our family table. We laughed, told stories, and blew bubbles in our chocolate milk. The diner was our playground, and who could argue with their dessert display?

In High School, the diner was a safe haven for us merry band of misfits in the drama club who would go and celebrate another opening for another show at the all-night diner. French fries, burgers, ice cream and more poured from the kitten to our pushed together tables, and for that one moment we didn't care who said the wrong line, or missed a cue. We sat and laughed over good food, and togetherness.

Now, as a late thirty-something, I enjoy going for the people watching and comfort food. Every now and then I will still get my chocolate milk and blow a bubble or two (I am never growing up), and those desserts are still calling my name, but for the time being I enjoy my corned-beef Ruben, delicious diner fries and think back to a by-gone day of care-free youth and a stronger metabolism. Let's bring back the diner lifestyle. No need for fancy food, dinner jackets or $20 drinks. Just a simple, tasty meal with friends or family where the stories flow like the fountain drinks, the laughter is thick as the chocolate shakes, and the memories live on with you in your mind for years to come.
